Good Friday

Instructions

To help guide you through this Good Friday reflection we are providing two different options. If you would prefer to not use technology you can download a paper copy by clicking here that replaces the music with prayer prompts and the homily with a written devotional.

If you prefer to have music and a recored homily included you can use the content on this page.

A Good Friday Reflection

To use this reflection you will need, a candle, bread and wine or grape juice, and a Bible. As a church we will be encouraging people to work through this Good Friday reflection at 8pm, but feel free to do it anytime on April 10th.

When you are read to work through the service light the single candle, turn the lights off in your room., and move through the rhythms of scripture, silence and song. If you would like to sing with the songs, sing, if you prefer to mediate on the words, listen in silence. This guide will also include a short homily from Pastor Scott and a liturgy to equip you to take communion at home. Whether you do this with your family, a roommate, or by yourself, we hope that you encounter the Holy Spirit as you reflect on the death of God.

The Anguish of God

READ: Matthew 26:36-46
Create in me a clean heart, a clean heart
For I have turned my face from You
Save us from our ways oh God, oh God
For we have turned away from You
Lord have mercy

CHORUS
We will run to you, we will run to you
Turning from our sin we return to You
Father heal your world, make all things new
Make all things new

Your love and mercy build and shape us
Break us and recreate us now
Lord have mercy

The Arrest of God

READ: Matthew 26:47-56
Man of sorrows Lamb of God
By His own betrayed
The sin of man and wrath of God
Has been on Jesus laid

Oh that rugged cross My salvation
Where Your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out Hallelujah
Praise and honor unto Thee

The Trial of God

READ: Matthew 26:57-27:2
Silent as He stood accused
Beaten mocked and scorned
Bowing to the Father's will
He took a crown of thorns

Oh that rugged cross My salvation
Where Your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out Hallelujah
Praise and honor unto Thee

The Sentencing of God

READ: Matthew 27:11-23
Man of sorrows what a name
for the Son of God, who came
ruined sinners to reclaim:
Hallelujah, what a Savior!

Bearing shame and scoffing rude,
in my place condemned he stood,
sealed my pardon with his blood:
Hallelujah, what a Savior!

Guilty, vile, helpless we;
Spotless Lamb of God was he,
Full atonement can it be?
Hallelujah, what a Savior!

The Suffering of God

READ: Matthew 27:24-30
His appearance was so badly marred
He could not have been recognized
So disfigured, so beyond all human likeness
That we hid our eyes

Though he carried all our griefs and bore our sorrows
We esteemed him not
But despised him and considered him afflicted
And as one reviled by God

CHORUS
Though all of us have gone astray
Though all have turned to their own ways
The Lord has laid our wickedness on him
His punishment has brought us peace
And crushed for our iniquities
He died to save his people from their sin

He was stricken, and though pierced for our transgressions
He did not lash out
But was silent, like a lamb led to the slaughter
So he opened not his mouth

BRIDGE
The might of Yahweh stands revealed
And by his wounds we all are healed

He offered up his soul to death
He poured it out till none was left
He died but now shall rise and surely see
The many he has righteous made
And satisfied, his work surveyed
The man of sorrows evermore shall be

On high, exalted, lifted up
The righteous servant raised above
His might hand shall work the will of God
The nations all shall hear and see
Astonished at his victory
The kings of men will shut their mouths in awe

The Crucifixion of God

READ: Matthew 27:32-44
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

CHORUS
Look at the Humility of God
Look at the Humility of God

Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?

The Death of God

READ: Matthew 27:45-54
In Christ alone  who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe.
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live.

Look at the humility of God
Look at the humility of God

There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness  slain.

Spiritual Vermin - A Homily

Communion

[Pick up bread]
For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, [break bread] and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
[Eat the bread]

[Pick up cup]
In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
[Drink the cup]

Christ has died,
Christ is risen,
Christ will come again.

Gracious God, send your Holy Spirit upon us, we pray, that the bread which we break and the cup which we bless may be to us the communion of the body and blood of Christ. Grant that, being joined together in Him, we may attain to the unity of the faith and grow up in all things into Christ our Lord.  As this bread is Christ’s body for us, send us out to be the body of Christ in the world.

Worship

Oh, bring us back to you
Oh, bring us back to you
Oh, bring us back to you
(x2)

We will run to you, we will run to you
Turning from our sin we return to You
Father heal your world, make all things new
Make all things new
(x2)
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

CHORUS
Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

For my pardon, this I see,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Nothing can for sin atone,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Naught of good that I have done,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

This is all my hope and peace,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
This is all my righteousness,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Now by this I’ll overcome
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
Now by this I’ll reach my home
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
