Trinity Sunday

A Trinity Sunday Reflection

To use this reflection all you need is access to this webpage. As a church we will be encouraging people to work through this Trinity Sunday reflection Sunday evening at 8pm, but feel free to do it anytime on June 7th.

When you are ready to work through the service light the single candle, turn the lights off in your room., and move through the rhythms of scripture, prayer, and song. If you would like to sing with the songs, sing, if you prefer to mediate on the words, listen in silence. This guide will also include a short homily from Pastor Scott. Whether you do this with your family, a roommate, or by yourself, we hope that you encounter the Holy Spirit as you reflect on the death of God.

Trinity in Belief

Please read the following creed out loud, in doing so we confess the three persons of the Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
      creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
      He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
      was crucified, died, and was buried;
      he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
      He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
      the holy catholic* church,
      the communion of saints,
      the forgiveness of sins,
      the resurrection of the body,
      and the life everlasting. Amen.
Our Father everlasting
The all creating One
God Almighty
Through Your Holy Spirit
Conceiving Christ the Son
Jesus our Savior

Chorus
I believe in God our Father
I believe in Christ the Son
I believe in the Holy Spirit
Our God is three in one
I believe in the resurrection
That we will rise again
For I believe in the name of Jesus

Trinity  in Creation

We praise God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit for their work of creation. Take some time to look over God's creation, walk into your back yard, look out the window at the mountains, or examine a houseplant that is near by as you reflect on the following two verses.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. // Genesis 1:1-2

He [Jesus]  is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.  For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. // Colossians 1:15-17
All creatures of our God and King
Life up your voice and with us sing
O praise Him, Alleluia
Thou burning sun with golden beam
Thou silver moon with softer gleam
O praise Him, O praise Him
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia

Thou rushing wind that art so strong
Ye clouds that sail in Heaven along
O praise Him, Alleluia
Thou rising moon in praise rejoice
Ye lights of evening find a voice
O praise Him, O praise Him
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia

Let all things their Creator bless
And worship Him in humbleness
O praise Him, Alleluia
Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son
And praise the Spirit, three in one
O praise Him, O praise Him
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia

Trinity in Confession

Throughout the history of the church Christian have confessed that it is right and proper to pray to each member of the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Before singing with the next song take some time to confess your sin, those things you have done that are against the will of God,  and the things you have left undone that are against the will of God. Confess these sins to each person of the Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
O spirit of God Speak your peace Speak your peace
Now and at the hour of our death Amen, amen
Now and at the hour of our death Amen, amen

Oh merciful God Forgive us, forgive us
Oh merciful God Forgive us, forgive us
For all the things We have done and left undone
For all the things We have done and left undone

Oh son of God Rescue us, resc
ue us
Oh son of God Rescue us, rescue us
Now and at the hour of our death Amen, amen
Now and at the hour of our death Amen

Trinity in Invitation

Take some time to meditate on 2 Peter 1:3-4

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

By the life and death of Jesus we are invited into the communion of the Trinity. We share in the very life of God. Feel free to repeat this song several times, reading through the verse in-between each repetition and asking God that you would experience your union with Him.
Holy Father, Son and Spirit
Holy Communion, Three-in-one.

Come with your peace,
With your invitation
Bind us together in Holy love.

The Trinity: Hope Above the Shadow

Athanasian Creed

When Christian theology is at its best it seeks to guard mystery rather than explain it away. The Athanasisan creed does that. While it can at times feel cumbersome or strange in its language, it seeks to articulate both the unity and diversity of the inner life of God. Take some time to read through this creed, praying that God would move you to worship and wonder and you reflect on the mystery of the Trinity
That we worship one God in trinity and the trinity in unity,
neither blending their persons nor dividing their essence.
For the person of the Father is a distinct person  the person of the Son is another,  and that of the Holy Spirit still another.
But the divinity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, their glory equal, their majesty coeternal.
What quality the Father has, the Son has, and the Holy Spirit has.
The Father is uncreated, the Son is uncreated, the Holy Spirit is uncreated.
The Father is immeasurable, the Son is immeasurable, the Holy Spirit is immeasurable.
The Father is eternal, the Son is eternal, the Holy Spirit is eternal.
And yet there are not three eternal beings; there is but one eternal being.
            So too there are not three uncreated or immeasurable beings;
there is but one uncreated and immeasurable being.
Similarly, the Father is almighty,  the Son is almighty,    the Holy Spirit is almighty.
Yet there are not three almighty beings;  there is but one almighty being.
Thus the Father is God,   the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God.
Yet there are not three gods;  there is but one God.
Thus the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord,   the Holy Spirit is Lord.
Yet there are not three lords; there is but one Lord.

Worship

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty
Early in the morning Our song shall rise to Thee
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty
God in three persons Blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see
Only Thou art holy There is none beside Thee
Perfect in power, in love and purity

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty
Oh thy works shall praise Thy name In earth and sky and sea
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty
God in three persons Blessed Trinity
Oh God in three persons Blessed Trinity!
In the darkness, we were waiting
Without hope, without light
'Til from Heaven You came running
There was mercy in Your eyes
To fulfill the law and prophets
To a virgin came the Word
From a throne of endless glory
To a cradle in the dirt

CHORUS
Praise the Father, praise the Son
Praise the Spirit, three in one
God of glory, Majesty
Praise forever to the King of Kings

To reveal the kingdom coming
And to reconcile the lost
To redeem the whole creation
You did not despise the cross
For even in Your suffering
You saw to the other side
Knowing this was our salvation
Jesus for our sake You died

And the morning that You rose
All of Heaven held its breath
'Til that stone was moved for good
For the Lamb had conquered death
And the dead rose from their tombs
And the angels stood in awe
For the souls of all who'd come
To the Father are restored

And the church of Christ was born
Then the Spirit lit the flame
Now this gospel truth of old
Shall not kneel, shall not faint
By His blood and in His name
In His freedom I am free
For the love of Jesus Christ
Who has resurrected me, ohh
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise Him all creatures here below
Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost

Amen Amen Amen
God we praise You
God we praise You
